With this rise in popularity, developers who previously worked with Objective-C (Apple's original iOS programming language) must adapt to the shifting landscape in order to stay relevant. In recent years, Swift has been trending up in the popularity chart and, in 2016, Swift hits an all-time high, coming in at number 17 on the list. RedMonk, a developer-focused analysis firm, assesses the popularity of programming languages by analyzing the volume of conversation around a specific language on Stack Overflow in combination with the number of repositories created using that language on GitHub. Since its introduction in 2014, Swift has undergone several iterations and continues to grow in popularity among the iOS developer community.
